BLACKPINK Already Breaking Records After the Release of ‘How You Like That’

We like that, we like that very much

June 26, 2020

1.65 million, that’s how many BLACKPINK fans tuned in for the reveal of their new song “How You Like That.”

The group breaks the record of 1.54 million, set by fellow K-pop stars BTS just this February. And this isn’t the first or only time the K-pop quartet has set YouTube records. Last year they became the first K-pop group to have a video reach a billion views. And they also happen to be the most-subscribed music group on the video-sharing platform, with 37.5 million followers who have dubbed themselves Blinks.

While the K-pop girl group surfaced on Lady Gaga’s Chromatica single “Sour Candy,” “How You Like That” acts as the catalyst for the band's first full-length studio album, due in September. The release of the highly-anticipated track marked the band's official comeback after a year-long hiatus. And clearly, according to the numbers, they were extremely missed.

The video’s aesthetic is the epitome of a vibe. Throughout the various colorful scenes, Lisa, Jennie, Rosé and Jisoo sing and dance in a variety of dramatically-lit settings, from a lush rainforest and an ice palace to a room filled with scorched umbrellas, and a grand domed hall, where the quartet are surrounded by dancers and statues of horses.

The bi-lingual lyrics convey a powerful message of overcoming obstacles, delivered with the in your face, girl power style that we love and expect from BLACKPINK. Delivered over a Hip-Hop-infused track, with elements of Middle Eastern instrumentals mixed in.

During a pre-release press conference Jisoo said, "we sang to give the message of not being daunted by dark situations and to not lose the confidence and strength to stand up again.”

“How You Like That” premiered on their VLive and YouTube channels at 10:00 BST on Friday.
