Ludacris Debuts Music, Nelly Fights WiFi Issues in Epic 'Verzuz' Battle
A 2000s face-off for the ages
The Verzuz battle we had all been waiting for between Nelly and Ludacris finally went down this Saturday night.
If you were at all alive and conscious in the early 2000s then you were undeniably obsessed with one or both of these two. And this weekend's battle brought us back to a simpler time of fashioning band aids under your eye and "dancing in front of the mirror while your on the phone..."
The evening was filled with hit after hit, banter and a bit of roasting, mutual recognition of the 20th anniversary for both of their debut albums, some new music on Ludaâs part, and spotty WiFi for Nelly.
Over 400,000 viewers popped in to witness the epic battle between the formidable opponents over the three-hour long session, with celeb pop-ins from Usher, Chance the Rapper, Snoop Dogg, and more.
Similar to the other battles that have already taken place, the rappers showed each other respect with Nelly telling Luda that his âlongevity is legendary.â And Ludacris letting Nelly know , "there are no other Nellys in the world.â
After the brief love fest, the battle began. First song up for Luda, Jermaine Dupri feat. Ludacrisâ âWelcome to Atlantaâ vs. Nellyâs âNa-NaNa-Naâ feat. Jazze Pha. By round 2 Nellyâs WiFi issues came into play, Ludacris dropped his hit feat. Shawnna & Lil Fateâs âP-Poppinââ but Nelly returned with a vengeance with âTip Drillâ for the win. Round 3, was for the ladies Ludacris feat. Nicki Minaj's âMy Chick Badâ vs. Nellyâs âPimp Juice.â
The battle continued on and so did the hits, switching up tempos, and taking a few breaks, due to guess what⊠Nellyâs atrocious WiFi. During one of those breaks Luda took the opportunity to stray from the battle to debut some unreleased music. Produced by Timbaland and featuring Lil Wayne, the track is called "Silence Of The Lambs" and references Bill Cosby, R. Kelly, and Roseanne Barr.
âI love R. Kelly, but around my daughters Iâm not comfortable,â Luda raps in the opening verse, after dropping a lyrical reference to âBill Huxtable.â
Luda didnât play the entire track, giving us just enough and leaving us wanting more. Lucky for us he hinted at an extended project with Timbaland in the works, âWe got like 20 of these!â He also played part of a song with Chance the Rapper, who was among the list of celebs you logged on to enjoy the battle.
Saturday's battle was the latest edition of the ongoing series by producers Swizz Beatz and Timbaland as a way to keep us entertained and connected during quarantine. Previous battles have included singers Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, rappers T-Pain and Lil Jon and more.
So... whoâs up next?
